Common Questions to ask your Pediatric Dentist

Mother thinking of questions she needs to ask her childs pediatric dentist at Puget Sound and Pediatric Dentistry. It’s important to us at Puget Sound and Pediatric Dentistry in Marysville, WA that all of our patients have the information necessary to keep them smiling confidently. Even our youngest patients can benefit tremendously from learning more about their oral health. Learning how to properly take care of their teeth now will build the foundation for healthy smiles for the rest of their lives. We’ve compiled a list below of some of the most commonly asked questions and answers we receive, and we invite you to bring whatever questions you have to your next appointment.

How old Should my Child be before their first visit to the dentist?

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), your child’s first visit to the dentist should occur either at the age of one or 6 months after their first tooth has come in, whichever comes first. Having the opportunity to meet your child and understand their oral issues at an early age gives us a chance to build trust with you and them so that everyone feels comfortable seeing us on a semi-annual basis for their routine cleanings and check-ups.

Why are Baby Teeth Important?

Many parents wonder why baby teeth are so important, especially since they only last a few years. A healthy mouth depends on several factors, and if your child’s oral health suffers or if baby teeth are lost before their natural time, it can set up a bad precedent for future oral health. If your child’s oral health is suffering while they still have their baby teeth, then it’s likely that their oral health will continue to suffer as their adult teeth come in.

How often should my Child have Dental Checkups?

Generally, we like to see our patients at least twice a year. Professional cleanings during your check-ups can help clear away plaque and tartar in areas your family may miss with normal brushing and flossing. Some patients may require more or fewer visits depending on their oral health.

Does my child need Dental X-Rays?

We typically like to take the first dental x-rays between ages three and five. Depending on our initial observations and how your child’s teeth are coming in, we may wish to take dental X-rays sooner or later within that time frame. Following the first set, we’ll take additional X-rays every one or two years to help us catch oral issues that may not be obvious, like cavities so that we can treat them early.

What Kind of Toothpaste should my child use?

There are so many great brands and flavors of children’s toothpaste, but the number of choices can also be overwhelming! We generally recommend that you choose toothpaste without fluoride for children younger than two. Kids that young tend to swallow most or all of their toothpaste, so its best to avoid fluoride toothpaste. If your child is good with spitting out their toothpaste, then they’re probably ready for toothpaste with fluoride in it.
