Nitrous Oxide

Little Girl in Pink Sweater smiling after Dentist Appointment with Sedation - Nitrous Oxide. At Puget Sound Pediatric Dentistry, we focus on giving our patients a high-quality experience that they will enjoy because we know that they will carry these experiences with them for a lifetime. Your kids deserve the highest quality dental care and experience that we have to offer, which is why we offer sedation dentistry for kids. One of the sedation options that we offer as a pediatric dental office is nitrous oxide. Nitrous oxide is a light sedative that can help your children to feel calm and have an enjoyable experience no matter what the procedure.

What is nitrous oxide?

Nitrous oxide is a light sedative that we use to help control anxiety before and during procedures. We administer it as a gas through a mask that fits over your child’s nose. Through this mask, we pump a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen to ensure that they receive a safe and mild dosage. It may take some time for your child to feel the effects of the sedative and we are for letting it take full effect before beginning the procedure.

A Calming Experience

The experience that nitrous oxide has on the patient is a calming and numbing one. Nitrous oxide is often referred to as laughing gas because it often causes the patient to find everything as being very funny. As the gas is administered, the patient will slowly start to feel their extremities become heavy and numb. Their worries will slip away and be replaced with a warm satisfaction. They will remain awake and reasonably alert so that they can respond to our questions and requests.

Available for Any Procedure

We understand how hard it can be for anyone to deal with dental office anxiety. It’s fairly common for kids to be scared of the dentist. We understand that trust is earned over time and will do everything in our power to forge a relationship built on trust with you and your kids. Nitrous oxide is available upon request for any procedure. It’s a good idea to let us know before the day of the procedure that you would like nitrous oxide administered during the procedure so that we can prepare you with preparation instructions. Before a procedure involving nitrous oxide, it is wise not to have a heavy meal.

Safe for Children

We follow all rules, regulations, and guidelines put forth by the ADA regarding dental sedation and want you to know that your child is in good hands. We will walk you and your child through every step of the process and make sure that if you have any questions, they are answered thoroughly.

Please remember to schedule a cleaning and examination appointment for your child at least once every six months so that we can stay up-to-date on their oral health and prevent oral maladies from occurring. With your help, we can help to ensure that your kid’s mouth stays happy and healthy for years to come!
